Semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan has begun work in eastern Germany to set up its first European plant, seeking to protect chip supplies amid growing tensions between the United States and China. The plant costs 10 billion euros ($11 billion) to build in Dresden.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: "We rely on semiconductors for our sustainable future technologies, but we must not rely on other regions of the world to supply semiconductors."
Germany is leading the EU's efforts to produce five of the world's semiconductors by 2030, as the EU seeks to build capacity in the wake of Covid-era turmoil and as the relationship between Washington and Beijing deteriorates.
